Many students prefer face to face interactions to technology mediated conversations. Some students need constant reassurance that what they do is correct and that they are going in the right direction, so they need feedback to keep them moving. Before college and university classes, students are used to going to school and learning in a classroom surrounded by classmates. Even if they dont need to do that anymore after high school, to combine a place traditionally meant for acquiring knowledge with the environment of their homes is confusing for them. The learning atmosphere of the traditional classroom helps them to stay focused and keeps them motivated; unlike virtual classrooms, where procrastination can become a common attitude, traditional classrooms preserve a feeling of now and here all through the learning process. Some students dont have access to technological devices, so online classes are out of the question. Some dont know how to use them, and some dont care about them. In a traditional classroom environment, learning begins with the teacher sharing his knowledge with students, proceeds with discussions between the teacher and the students and ends with the new information written in notebooks. For students of specializations that have nothing to do with technology, printed courses and books from the library are, in most cases, enough. Another advantage of traditional classroom learning is that it provides students with a fixed schedule and specific periods dedicated exclusively to learning. Most adults lead busy lives these days, whether they have a demanding job or children in school.

We could argue all day about whether or not digital pedagogy can ever be anything but a simulacrum of real teaching, but I doubt we would spend a second debating the importance of a good attitude in either method. Steve HamelmanSince were in the middle, at best, of the crisis, there is little sociological, academic, or psychological literature on it. Data collection and conclusions based on case studies are months away. Statistical and anecdotal evidence is yet to be compiled and published. We teachers and administrators find ourselves in uncharted territory, casting about with trepidation but also with faith that common sense, diligence, and loyalty to our students will ensure safe passage. Blessings Not in DisguiseUnderlying this essay is the assumption that total online education cant hold a candle to the live, Socratic, performative classroom model. Online, I cant read and react to facial or body language, connect with an immediate voice, improvise as rapidly, work the physical area, circle the room, finesse, gesture, or feint. But it does neither my students nor me any good to harp on the deficiencies of digital, especially when one concedes the advantages digital does have over the material. As of now, the argument is moot anyway. No matter how hackneyed this may sound, a positive attitude goes a long way. We must make the best of the present moment, embrace the default medium, savor the gains rather than mourn the losses, and communicate optimism to our students.

The line between the two can be blurry at times, we are going to see their differences a bit better in a later paragraph. The form of a tree is chosen because it is an easy and natural way to work with the code at different levels of detail. For example, a class in C has one body, this body is made of one statement, the block statement, that is a list of statements enclosed in a pair of curly brackets, and so onA parser is a fundamental part of a compiler, or an interpreter, but of course can be part of a variety of other software. For example, in our article Generate diagrams from C source code using Roslyn we parsed C files to produce diagrams. The parser can only check the syntactic correctness of piece of code, but the compiler can use its output also in the process of checking the semantic validity of the same piece of code. The problem is that one variable y is never defined and thus if executed the program will fail. However the parser has no way of knowing this, because it does not keep track of variables, it just looks at the structure of the code. A compiler instead would typically traverse the parse tree a first time and keeps a list of all the variables that are defined. Then it traverse the parse tree a second time and checks whether the variables that are used are all properly defined. In this example they are not and it will throw an error. So that is one way the parse tree can also be used to check the semantics by the compiler.
